THE 3 STOOGES: MoE, KPC and KPRL

According to oxforddictionaries.com, a stooge is a subordinate used by another to do unpleasant routine work.

The following 3 are the main cause of the never ending problems in Kenya’s oil sector.

Ministry of Energy (Moe)

The honchos of this Ministry have clearly lost the plot and have zero support from the Kenyan public. They should resign (wouldn’t bet on it) for clearly failing to undertake their duties.

MoE has to be the worst run ministry in Kenya. They are more interested in reacting to crises when they occur than in preventing them. These fire fighting tactics will do nothing other than make a few individuals richer.

The Petroleum Institute of East Africa had a proposal to reduce the price of fuel products. I doubt MoE lent them an ear.

The Ministry has resorted to issuing emergency tenders, while at the same time saying there is no shortage of fuel products. Do these guys have 2 different spokespersons or what?

The smell of the dead cat that is Triton still reeks as foul as ever.

Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC)

KPC faces the threat of being wound up and placed under receivership over breach of contract for failing to deposit Sh4.6 billion in a joint account with KenolKobil awaiting conclusion of its appeal against a court award to KenolKobil in lost business.
Is it ‘Too Big To Fail’?

Kenya Petroleum Refineries Limited (KPRL)

This has to be the most inefficient refinery in the world. I’m not kidding. Ideally, it should not even be existing!
It is cheaper for Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to import refined fuel than to purchase directly from KPRL.

Yet OMC’s are forced to import a certain percentage of their products from the refinery. Imagine the Government forcing you buy Sugar X at 250/= a kilo, while Sugay Y is trading at 100/= a kilo and is in no way deficient in quality.

Doesn’t feel good, does it?

I call them stooges as I believe that they are merely puppets being used by powerful figures to do their bidding. Serious cash is no doubt being made in the murky waters that are Kenya’s oil industry.

It is said that a lie repeated many times might start sounding like the truth. The 3 Stooges have been constantly blaming oil marketers of creating an “artificial” shortage every time there is no fuel at the pumps. Media houses seem to be running with this story now.
A business publication editorial today launched a scathing attack on KenolKobil accusing the oil marketer of attempting to influence prices when the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announces the maximum price consumers should pay for oil products. The announcement is expected to be made next week.

KenolKobil merely gave its professional opinion that fuel prices are likely to hike. What’s wrong with that? There is still chaos in the Middle East and North Africa, where much of the world’s oil is produced. Plus the thirst for oil by the fast growing economies of China and India seems to be unquenchable by current supply, thus prices will remain high.

Why has The Business Daily never admonished either of The 3 Stooges in such a strong manner before despite their blatant shortcomings?

Oil marketers may be causing increased prices through speculation, but this cannot be the major reason for the increase in prices. Let us tackle the major problem and not offshoots. And everyone knows that the number 1 cause of turmoil in Kenya’s oil industry is corrupt elements.

And if these corrupt elements have now managed to infiltrate the mainstream media, Kenyans have every reason to worry. BIG TIME!

  1. Damn it! I say we have some sort of national petition against these thieves....KK is simply in business, we can't exonerate them but placing the blame on them is stupid at worst and vicious at best.
